It’s the question we get most: how often do my bins actually need to be cleaned? The honest answer is “it depends” — but here’s a simple way to figure out your rhythm.
The quick answer
For most households, once a month is the sweet spot. It keeps odor and bacteria from ever building up without being overkill.
When to go more often (bi-weekly)
Step up to every two weeks if you:
- Have a big family or throw out a lot of food waste
- Own pets (especially if diapers or pet waste go in the bin)
- Live somewhere that gets hot — summer in West Virginia turns a dirty bin sour fast
When quarterly is enough
A clean every 12 weeks works well if you’re a smaller household, you bag everything carefully, and you mostly just want a seasonal reset to stay ahead of grime.
Don’t forget the one-time reset
If your bin is already funky, start with a one-time deep clean to get back to zero, then pick a recurring schedule to keep it there. Trying to maintain a bin that was never properly cleaned in the first place is an uphill battle.
